Florida State recruited him as a linebacker, then moved him to running back, where a freshman ACL tear wiped out a season. In the NFL he became something rarer: a lead blocker teams paid like a starter. The Jaguars took him 55th overall in 2004, and in 2007 they signed him to a five-year, 17.4 million dollar deal that briefly made him the highest-paid fullback in league history.

For most of a decade he cleared paths for Fred Taylor and then Maurice Jones-Drew, and he could carry it himself when asked, finishing with 913 rushing yards and ten touchdowns to go with 471 receiving yards. He spent 2004 through 2012 in Jacksonville, added a 2013 season in Houston, and retired in 2015 as a Jaguar.

Madden mapped the climb from complementary piece to feared blocker. His overall opened at 75 in the 2004 edition, jumped to 84 in 2006, and reached 91 in both the 2008 and 2012 games. That was the reward for a job that almost never shows up in a box score.
