Marion Barber III was born on June 10, 1983, in Plymouth, Minnesota, the son of former New York Jets running back Marion Barber Jr. He rushed for 3,276 yards at Minnesota, and Dallas drafted him in the fourth round of the 2005 draft, 109th overall. He shared carries with Julius Jones as a rookie, and Madden NFL 06 rated him 73.
He scored 14 rushing touchdowns in 2006. In 2007 he ran for 975 yards and 10 touchdowns without starting a game and was named to the Pro Bowl, a season for which Madden NFL 08 rated him 86. Dallas signed him to a seven-year, $45 million extension in May 2008 and made him the starter, and Madden NFL 09 rated him 93 for that year.
He averaged 3.3 yards a carry in 2010, the lowest mark of his career, and Dallas released him in July 2011. Chicago signed him two days later, and Madden NFL 12 rated him 75 for his final season. He retired before the 2012 season with 4,780 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns. Barber died in Frisco, Texas, on June 1, 2022, at the age of 38, and the Collin County medical examiner ruled the cause heat stroke and the death accidental.
