For four years in New York he waited behind Curtis Martin, a second-round pick out of Maryland stuck taking scraps. When the Raiders handed him a five-year, $27.5 million deal in 2005, he made the wait look worth it. That season he ran for 1,025 yards and caught 70 passes, more receptions than any running back in the league, a compact and powerful runner who could also flare out of the backfield.

Injuries cut the run short. A torn MCL in 2006 and a back problem in 2007 sapped the Oakland years, and he finished with single seasons in New England and Denver.

His Madden arc mirrors the breakout precisely. He held at 72 in the 2001 and 2002 editions as a Jets backup, rose through the high 70s and 80s, and hit a 90 in the 2006 edition after the 1,025-yard year, then slid back to the 60s by the 2009 edition as the injuries took hold. He later moved into coaching, taking over the Washington Prodigy in 2024.
