Fred Taylor was born on January 27, 1976 in Pahokee, Florida, and played college football for the Florida Gators. Jacksonville drafted him ninth overall in 1998, and he started 12 of 15 games as a rookie. Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 89 for the 1998 season, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 93 for 2000.

He played only two games in 2001, then started all 16 in each of the next two seasons; Madden NFL 04 rated him 90 for 2003. He became the Jaguars' all-time leading rusher. In 2007 he ran for 1,202 yards on 223 carries, led the AFC at 5.4 yards per carry, was added to the AFC Pro Bowl roster and was named second-team All-Pro. Madden NFL 09 rated him 94 for the 2008 season.

Taylor joined New England in 2009 and played two seasons there. On September 2, 2011 he signed a one-day contract with Jacksonville in order to retire with the team that drafted him, and the Jaguars added him to their Pride of the Jaguars ring of honor on September 30, 2012. He finished with 11,695 rushing yards, 11,271 of them for Jacksonville.
