The bruising lead blocker who reached the Pro Bowl the long way
Mike Sellers never got drafted. He came out of Walla Walla Community College, went unsigned, and spent chunks of his career in the CFL, first with Edmonton and later with Winnipeg, where he was the power half of a rushing tandem the league called Thunder and Lightning next to Charles Roberts. In between and after, he kept finding his way back to Washington, playing there from 1998 to 2000 and again from 2004 to 2011, with a season in Cleveland and two more up north sandwiched around it. At roughly 280 pounds he was a genuine load ahead of the ball carrier and a force on special teams.
His reward came late. After a strong 2008 season he was voted the starting fullback for the 2009 Pro Bowl. Madden logged the whole winding trip. A 76 in the 2000 edition fell to a 57 in 2002 while he was out of the league, climbed back into the low 80s, and finally topped out at an 89 in the 2009 edition on the strength of that Pro Bowl year, before settling to 84 and 82 as his role narrowed.
