Madden NFL 2002 shipped in summer 2001 for the 2001 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 2002 released August 20, 2001 with Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper on the cover. The 99 club: Jonathan Ogden, Marshall Faulk, Ray Lewis, Tony Gonzalez, and Warren Sapp.

New England won Super Bowl XXXVI, 20-17 over the Rams on a last-second Vinatieri field goal, Tom Brady named game MVP. Kurt Warner won regular-season MVP, Marshall Faulk took Offensive Player of the Year, and Michael Strahan won Defensive Player of the Year with a record 22.5 sacks. Anthony Thomas and Kendrell Bell won the rookie awards.

Cover man Culpepper was the curse poster child: 14 interceptions, a knee injury, and a 5-11 Vikings team a year after a Pro Bowl. Strahan went the other way, breaking the single-season sack record.
