Jason Douglas Hanson was born on June 17, 1970 in Spokane, Washington and graduated from Mead High School in 1988. He walked on at Washington State, was a unanimous All-American in 1989, and set a school record with a 62-yard field goal. Detroit drafted him in the second round, 56th overall, in 1992, and the Pro Football Writers of America named him Offensive Rookie of the Year.

He made 28 of 34 field goals in 1995, a season Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 89. Madden NFL 97 rated him 66 for 1996, when he attempted only 17 kicks. He was a second-team All-Pro in 1997 and a Pro Bowl selection after the 1997 and 1999 seasons. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 92 for the 2000 season.

On December 14, 2008 he passed Morten Andersen for the most field goals of 50 yards or longer in NFL history. Madden NFL 10 rated him 95 for 2009. A right knee injury put him on injured reserve on December 2, 2010 after eight games. He came back to make 32 of 36 kicks in 2012 and set NFL records with 21 seasons and 327 games for one team. Hanson retired on April 4, 2013 with 495 field goals and 2,150 points, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2020.
