The Colts punter who held for a title, then won a statehouse seat
He punted at Notre Dame and then for eleven NFL seasons, but one of his rings came from holding. As the Colts' holder he set the ball down clean on Adam Vinatieri's kicks during the run to Super Bowl XLI, the February 2007 win over Chicago in the rain. Indianapolis had taken him in the seventh round in 1999, and he punted for them into 2008 before finishing in Washington.
He was not purely a specialist. In 2009 he threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to fullback Mike Sellers and also rushed for a score, becoming the first special-teams player to run and pass for touchdowns in the same season. Over his career he punted 691 times for 24,500 yards and a 43.0 average.
Madden treated him as one of the better legs of his era, lifting his overall through the decade to a 91 in the 2007 edition, right as the Super Bowl banner went up. Off the field he fronts a rock band, wrote a book about that championship team, and in 2024 won a seat in the Indiana House of Representatives.
