Joe Nedney Madden Career 1997-2011 - Peak 91 OVR
The journeyman kicker who beat Pittsburgh on a penalty flag
Nedney's signature kick came with a yellow flag attached. In the January 2003 AFC wild-card game at Pittsburgh, he missed a 31-yard try in overtime, then got a reprieve when Dewayne Washington ran into him. Given a second life, he drilled it and sent Tennessee home 34-31. That was the payoff for a career that started with no promises. Undrafted out of San Jose State in 1996, where he graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer, he bounced through Green Bay, Oakland, Miami, the Jets, Arizona, Baltimore, Denver and Carolina before the Titans gave him steady work from 2001 to 2004.
He found a real home in San Francisco from 2005 to 2010, going 26 for 28 in his first year there and booting a 56-yarder against St. Louis on Christmas Eve. He had a habit of ending other teams' seasons, with overtime field goals that knocked Kansas City, then Denver, out of playoff races in separate years.
His Madden number reflects the long climb. He opens at a rough 40 in the 1996 edition, sits at 81 by 2000, and tops out at a 91 in the 2006 game after his strong debut year with the 49ers. A knee injury ended it in 2011, the year his rating still read 85.
