Madden NFL 2009 shipped in summer 2008 for the 2008 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 09 released August 12, 2008 with Brett Favre on the cover for the franchise's 20th anniversary. The 99 tier: Antonio Gates, Bob Sanders, LaDainian Tomlinson, Peyton Manning, Randy Moss, and Tom Brady.

Pittsburgh won Super Bowl XLIII, 27-23 over Arizona on Santonio Holmes' late catch, Holmes named game MVP. Peyton Manning won regular-season MVP, Drew Brees took Offensive Player of the Year with 5,069 passing yards, James Harrison won Defensive Player of the Year, and Matt Ryan and Jerod Mayo won the rookie awards.

The launch's biggest 99 never played: Tom Brady tore his ACL in the first quarter of Week 1 and missed the entire season. Brees went the other way, finishing 15 yards short of Dan Marino's single-season passing record.
