Brad Maynard was born on February 9, 1974 in Tipton, Indiana, punted for Ball State as a two-time consensus All-American, and was taken by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1997 draft, 95th overall. He set rookie records with 111 punts and 4,531 punting yards and led the NFL in punting yards in 1997 and 1998. Madden NFL 98 put him at a calculated 82 for the 1997 season.

Maynard punted 11 times in the Giants' Super Bowl XXXV loss to Baltimore after the 2000 season, a Super Bowl record, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 84 for that year. He signed with Chicago in 2001 and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Brian Urlacher on a fake field goal that December. Madden NFL 04 rated him 95 for the 2003 season, his highest, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 92 for 2004, when he led the league in punting yards a third time and was named second-team All-Pro.

Chicago released him on July 25, 2011. Houston signed him that August and released him before the season, and Cleveland signed him that September for his final year. He entered the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame in 2013, and he finished with 1,339 punts for 56,021 yards.
