John Carney Madden Career 1992-2007 - Peak 92 OVR

Carney is one of only a handful of men to appear in NFL games in four different decades, a testament to a leg and a temperament that simply refused to age. He signed with Cincinnati as an undrafted free agent in 1987 out of Notre Dame, caught on in San Diego in 1990, and stayed a Charger for a full decade before a long second act in New Orleans from 2001.

The accuracy was the thing. He retired with 478 field goals on 580 attempts and 2,062 total points, numbers that placed him among the top handful of scorers in league history. His first Pro Bowl came in 1994, and remarkably his second arrived in 2008 with the Giants at age 44 after they signed him off the street. There was one cruel night too: in 2003, following the River City Relay miracle against Jacksonville, Carney pushed the extra point wide right, a rare miss that helped cost the Saints a playoff berth.

His Madden rating grades him as the metronome he was. He sits at 60 in the 1996 edition, jumps to 88 by 2000, and reaches a 91 in the 2003 game before settling in the 80s across his later seasons.
