Chris Gardocki was born on February 7, 1970 in Stone Mountain, Georgia, played at Clemson and left after his junior year for the 1991 NFL draft, where Chicago took him in the third round with the 78th pick. He handled the Bears' kickoffs as well as their punting. Madden NFL 94 put him at a calculated 42 for the 1993 season.

He joined Indianapolis in 1995. In 1996 he averaged a career-best 45.7 yards per punt, made the Pro Bowl and was named first-team All-Pro, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 38 for that season. He signed with Cleveland in 1999 and led the NFL in punting yards in both 1999 and 2000, taking second-team All-Pro honors for 2000, the season Madden NFL 2001 listed at 86.

Pittsburgh signed him in 2004, and he punted for the Steelers team that won Super Bowl XL after the 2005 season, a year Madden NFL 06 put at 92. None of his punts was ever blocked: he kicked 1,177 of them across sixteen seasons without one getting through, an NFL record. How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
