Shane Lechler was born on August 7, 1976 in East Bernard, Texas, and punted at Texas A&M, leaving with the NCAA career record of 44.7 yards per punt. Oakland drafted him in the fifth round in 2000, 142nd overall. He was a first-team All-Pro in his first season, which Madden NFL 2001 rated 77.

He made the first of seven Pro Bowls after 2001 and was named All-Pro nine times, six of them first-team. He punted 96 times for 4,503 yards in 2003, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 94. Madden NFL 06 rated him 99 for the 2005 season. His 96 punts for 4,909 yards in 2009 set a Raiders single-season record, and Madden NFL 10 rated him 98. In Week 12 of 2011 he hit an 80-yard punt against Chicago, the longest of his career.

Houston signed him in 2013. He led the league with 4,507 punting yards in 2017, and Madden NFL 18 rated him 80. The Texans released him on August 31, 2018, and he announced his retirement on March 30, 2019 with a career average of 47.6 yards per punt, a record he held from 2003 until Michael Dickson passed him in 2023. He was named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team and the Hall of Fame All-2010s Team.
