Baker Mayfield was born on April 14, 1995, in Austin, Texas. He walked on at Texas Tech in 2013, transferred to Oklahoma, and in 2017 became the first walk-on to win the Heisman Trophy. The Cleveland Browns took him first overall in the 2018 draft. He relieved Tyrod Taylor on September 20, 2018, and led a 21-17 comeback over the Jets that ended a 19-game Browns winless run, then set a rookie record with 27 touchdown passes. Madden NFL 19 listed him at 81 for that season.

Madden NFL 21 listed him at 78 for 2020, the year Cleveland went 11-5 and beat Pittsburgh 48-37 in the wild-card round on January 10, 2021, the franchise's first playoff win since the 1994 season. He played 2021 with a torn labrum, was traded to Carolina in July 2022, was released in December, and was claimed by the Rams, for whom he led a 98-yard game-winning drive against Las Vegas on December 8, 2022, two days after he joined the team.

Tampa Bay signed him in March 2023. Madden NFL 24 had opened that season with him at 72; he threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns and beat Philadelphia 32-9 in the wild-card round on January 15, 2024. He then threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2024, a season for which Madden NFL 25 listed him at 79, and he was named to the Pro Bowl after both years. Through the 2025 season he had 28,525 career passing yards and 197 touchdown passes.
