Taylor Heinicke: Undrafted ODU QB Who Started 29 NFL Games
Taylor Heinicke was born on March 15, 1993, in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and played college football at Old Dominion from 2011 to 2014. On September 22, 2012, he passed for 730 yards against New Hampshire, a Division I record, and he closed that season with an FCS-record 5,076 yards and the Walter Payton Award. He went undrafted in 2015 and signed with the Minnesota Vikings.
Heinicke debuted for the Houston Texans on December 25, 2017, completing his only attempt before a concussion ended his day. Carolina claimed him in April 2018, and he started Week 16 against Atlanta, completing 33 of 53 passes for 274 yards; Madden NFL 19 listed him at 55 overall for that season. Washington promoted him from the practice squad in December 2020, and he started the Wild Card playoff game against Tampa Bay, throwing for 306 yards and a touchdown.
He started 15 games for Washington in 2021 and nine in 2022, when Madden NFL 23 rated him 69 overall, his highest mark. He signed with Atlanta in March 2023 and started four games, a season for which Madden NFL 24 listed him at 68. The Falcons traded him to the Los Angeles Chargers in August 2024. Heinicke finished with 6,663 passing yards, 39 touchdowns and 28 interceptions in 42 games, and announced his retirement on May 7, 2026.
