Don Majkowski: 1989 NFL Passing Leader, AP MVP Runner-Up

Don Majkowski was born on February 25, 1964 in Buffalo, New York. He started at quarterback for Virginia and led the Cavaliers to the school's first bowl win, in the 1984 Peach Bowl. Green Bay selected him in the tenth round, 255th overall, of the 1987 draft.

In 1989 he threw for a league-leading 4,318 yards and 27 touchdowns as the Packers went 10-6, earning a Pro Bowl selection, AP second-team All-Pro honors and second place to Joe Montana in AP MVP voting. On November 5, 1989 his fourth-down touchdown pass to Sterling Sharpe was flagged as an illegal forward pass and then reversed on replay, giving Green Bay a 14-13 win over Chicago. A torn rotator cuff in the tenth game of 1990 ended that season, and Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 56 for 1991, when Mike Tomczak took the starts.

On September 20, 1992 he tore an ankle ligament against Cincinnati and was replaced by Brett Favre, who kept the job; Madden NFL 93 had Majkowski at a calculated 46 for that season. He spent 1993 and 1994 backing up in Indianapolis, where Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 78 for 1994, and closed his career in Detroit, graded a calculated 46 by Madden NFL 96 for 1995. He finished with 12,700 passing yards, 66 touchdowns and 67 interceptions, and was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 2005.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
