Bernie Kosar: Browns supplemental pick, 1987 Pro Bowl QB

Bernie Kosar was born November 25, 1963 in Youngstown, Ohio, and quarterbacked Miami to the 1983 national championship, beating Nebraska 31-30 in the Orange Bowl. He skipped the 1985 NFL draft to enter the supplemental draft, and the Cleveland Browns took him with the first pick there on July 3, 1985.

In the January 3, 1987 divisional playoff against the New York Jets he threw for 489 yards, a postseason record at the time, in a double-overtime win; a week later John Elway's 98-yard drive ended Cleveland's season. His most productive year was 1987, with 3,033 yards, 22 touchdowns, the AFC's best passer rating and his only Pro Bowl selection. Madden NFL 93 listed him at a calculated 76 for the 1992 season, which a broken ankle cut to seven games.

Bill Belichick released him in November 1993 after signing Vinny Testaverde; Madden NFL 94 listed a calculated 69 for that season, which ended with a Super Bowl XXVIII ring as a Dallas backup. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 78 for 1994, his first year behind Dan Marino in Miami, and Madden NFL 97 listed a stored 10 for 1996, his last. He finished 12 seasons with 1,994 completions, 23,301 passing yards, 124 touchdowns and 87 interceptions.
