Fourth-round pick who led the NFL in passing yards in 1999

Steve Beuerlein was born on March 7, 1965, in Hollywood, California, played at Notre Dame, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders in the fourth round, 110th overall, in 1987. Dallas acquired him in August 1991 to back up Troy Aikman. After Aikman injured his knee at Washington on November 24, 1991, Beuerlein started the last four regular-season games and won all four, then started a 17-13 wild-card win at Chicago. He backed up Aikman through 1992 and earned a ring in Super Bowl XXVII.

Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 30 for the 1991 season. He signed with Phoenix in 1993, was benched by Buddy Ryan in 1994, a year Madden NFL 95 gave him a calculated 80, and was the first selection of the 1995 expansion draft by Jacksonville. Carolina signed him in 1996, and he took the starting job for good in 1998, a season Madden NFL 99 put at a calculated 83.

In 1999 Beuerlein led the NFL with 4,436 passing yards, threw 36 touchdown passes, and made the Pro Bowl in his 13th season. He beat Green Bay 33-31 on a last-second quarterback draw on December 12, 1999, and threw five touchdown passes against New Orleans on January 2, 2000. Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 89 for the 2000 season, when he was sacked a league-high 62 times. A fractured finger ended his 2003 season in Denver and his playing career, and he retired with 24,046 passing yards, 147 touchdowns and 112 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
