Hugh Millen: Washington QB, 3,073 passing yards in 1991

Hugh Millen was born on November 22, 1963, in Des Moines, Iowa, and grew up in Seattle. He played at Santa Rosa Junior College before walking on at Washington, where he started 17 games and led the Huskies past Oklahoma in the 1985 Orange Bowl. The Los Angeles Rams drafted him in the third round, 71st overall, in 1986.

Millen missed his rookie season with a fractured ankle and attempted one pass in 1987 behind Jim Everett. Atlanta claimed him on waivers in 1988, and he started two games for the Falcons in 1990. He signed with New England in Plan B free agency on April 1, 1991, took over as starter in Week 4 and threw for 3,073 yards with nine touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 53 for 1991. On December 8 of that season he completed 21 of 40 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yard overtime winner to Michael Timpson against Indianapolis.

A third-degree shoulder separation in the 1992 opener held him to seven games, a season Madden NFL 93 listed at a calculated 62. He was traded to Dallas in April 1993 and never attempted a regular-season pass there, then spent 1994 and 1995 as John Elway's backup in Denver, where Madden NFL 95 had him at a calculated 82 for 1994. Millen last played in 1995, finishing with 560 completions on 928 attempts for 6,440 yards, 22 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
