Phil Simms: Super Bowl XXI MVP, 33,462 Yards for the Giants

Phil Simms was born on November 3, 1955 in Springfield, Kentucky, and played college football at Morehead State, where he finished with a school-record 5,545 passing yards. The New York Giants selected him seventh overall in the 1979 NFL draft. He won his first five starts as a rookie and was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.

Simms threw for 4,044 yards in 1984 and, on October 13, 1985, passed for 513 yards against Cincinnati in a 35-30 loss. He was voted to the Pro Bowl for the 1985 season. In Super Bowl XXI on January 25, 1987, he completed 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-20 win over Denver and was named the game's MVP, setting Super Bowl marks of 88 percent accuracy and a 150.9 passer rating.

A broken foot in Week 15 of 1990 ended his season, and Jeff Hostetler started Super Bowl XXV. Madden NFL 92 put Simms at a calculated 59 for the 1991 season, when Hostetler opened as the starter, and Madden NFL 93 had him at a calculated 46 for 1992, a year cut short by an elbow injury. He started all 16 games in 1993 and made a second Pro Bowl, a season Madden NFL 94 graded at a calculated 46. Released in 1994, he retired with 2,576 completions on 4,647 attempts for 33,462 yards, 199 touchdowns and 157 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
