Boomer Esiason, born Norman Julius Esiason on April 17, 1961, in East Islip, New York, played at Maryland, the only school to offer him a scholarship. Cincinnati drafted the left-handed quarterback in the second round, 38th overall, in 1984.

He threw 28 touchdown passes in 1988, led the NFL with a 97.4 passer rating, and was named AP MVP and first-team All-Pro. The Bengals lost Super Bowl XXIII 20-16 to San Francisco on January 22, 1989, with Esiason completing 11 of 25 passes for 144 yards. Cincinnati traded him to the Jets in March 1993, a season Madden NFL 94 scored at a calculated 46, and Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 90 for 1994.

He signed with Arizona in 1996 and threw for 522 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-34 overtime win over Washington on November 10 of that year, a season Madden NFL 97 carried at a stored 76. He returned to Cincinnati in 1997, threw 13 touchdowns against two interceptions in seven games and posted a 106.9 passer rating, and Madden NFL 98 scored that season at a calculated 79. He was named Walter Payton Man of the Year in 1995 and retired after 1997 with 37,920 passing yards, 247 touchdowns and four Pro Bowl selections.
