Calgary-born Redskins QB, Super Bowl XXVI MVP

Mark Rypien was born on October 2, 1962, in Calgary, Alberta, moved with his family to Spokane, Washington, at age three, played at Washington State, and was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the 1986 draft, 146th overall. He spent his first two seasons on injured reserve, including 1987, the year Washington won Super Bowl XXII.

Rypien took over as the starter in 1989, threw for 3,768 yards and was named to the Pro Bowl. His best year was 1991: 3,564 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, a 14-2 record and second-team All-Pro honors. On January 26, 1992, he passed for 292 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-24 Super Bowl XXVI win over Buffalo and was named MVP, the first foreign-born player to take the award. Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 46 for 1991.

Madden NFL 93 put him at a calculated 86 for 1992, a season he threw 13 touchdowns against 17 interceptions. A knee injury in Week 2 of 1993 ended his run in Washington, and Madden NFL 94 put him at a calculated 49 for that year. He backed up in Cleveland, St. Louis and Philadelphia, retired in 1998 after his son died of a brain tumor, and returned in 2001 for four games with Indianapolis. Rypien finished with 18,473 passing yards, 115 touchdowns and 88 interceptions in 104 games.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
