Jim McMahon: Super Bowl XX starter, 100 career TD passes

Jim McMahon was born on August 21, 1959, in Jersey City, New Jersey, and played college football at BYU, where he won the Davey O'Brien Award in 1981. The Chicago Bears drafted him fifth overall in 1982. On September 19, 1985, he came off the bench at Minnesota and threw touchdown passes on his first, second and seventh attempts in a 33-24 win.

McMahon was selected to the Pro Bowl for the 1985 season and started Super Bowl XX on January 26, 1986, passing for 256 yards and rushing for two touchdowns in Chicago's 46-10 win over New England. After a season in San Diego he moved to Philadelphia and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1991; Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 49 for that year. Madden NFL 94 listed him at a calculated 56 for 1993, when he started 12 games for Minnesota.

He started once for Arizona in 1994, a season for which Madden NFL 95 had him at a calculated 66, then joined Green Bay behind Brett Favre; Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 46 for 1995. McMahon was on the Packers roster for their Super Bowl XXXI win on January 26, 1997, and did not play again, ending with 18,148 passing yards, 100 touchdowns and 90 interceptions. How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
