Billy Joe Tolliver: 10,760 Yards Across Five NFL Teams

Billy Joe Tolliver was born on February 7, 1966 in Dallas, Texas. At Texas Tech he set school records for career passing yards (6,756), completions and touchdown passes. The San Diego Chargers drafted him in the second round, 51st overall, in 1989 after trading three picks to New York to move up for him.

Tolliver started 14 games for San Diego in 1990, completing 216 of 410 passes for 2,574 yards with 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. The Chargers traded him to Atlanta for a fifth-round pick in August 1991. On November 3, 1991, replacing an injured Chris Miller, he threw a 44-yard touchdown to Michael Haynes on the final play to beat San Francisco 17-14. Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 53 for the 1991 season.

He made seven starts for Houston in 1994, then threw for 3,767 yards for the CFL's Shreveport Pirates in 1995 before the club folded. He returned to Atlanta and played for the Falcons and Kansas City in 1997, a season Madden NFL 98 graded at a calculated 62. With New Orleans in 1998 he completed 110 of 199 passes for 1,427 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. Green Bay released him on August 21, 2001. How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
