Chris Chandler was born on October 12, 1965, in Everett, Washington, and played college football at Washington, finishing with 4,442 yards of total offense and 32 touchdown passes. The Indianapolis Colts drafted him in the third round, 76th overall, in 1988. He started 13 games as a rookie and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

A knee injury ended his 1989 season. He was traded to Tampa Bay in 1990 and released during 1991, and Madden NFL 93 listed him at a calculated 43 for 1992, his first season starting in Phoenix. He signed with Houston in 1995, and on September 24 of that year he completed 23 of 26 passes for 352 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-28 win at Cincinnati, a perfect 158.3 passer rating. Madden NFL 97 listed him at 87 for 1996, his last season with the Oilers.

Atlanta acquired him in 1997, and he was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1997 and 1998 seasons. He led the Falcons to a 14-2 record in 1998 and started Super Bowl XXXIII on January 31, 1999, throwing for 219 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in a 34-19 loss to Denver. Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 91 for the 1999 season, and Madden NFL 02 listed him at 69 for 2001, when he passed for 2,847 yards. Chandler played for Chicago in 2002 and 2003 and St. Louis in 2004, finishing with 28,484 passing yards, 170 touchdowns and 146 interceptions across 17 seasons.
