Cody Carlson: Baylor QB Who Backed Up Warren Moon in Houston

Cody Carlson was born on November 5, 1963 in Dallas, Texas, played college football at Baylor, and was selected by the Houston Oilers in the third round of the 1987 draft with the 64th overall pick. He spent his entire eight-season career with the Oilers, most of it behind Warren Moon.

With Moon hurt late in 1990, Carlson threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns against Pittsburgh in the regular-season finale, then started the wild-card game at Cincinnati on January 6, 1991, completing 16 of 33 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-14 loss. Madden NFL 92 carried a calculated 49 overall for the 1991 season. His most productive year came in 1992, when he passed for 1,710 yards in 11 games and six starts; Madden NFL 94 listed a calculated 56 for the 1993 season.

Moon left after 1993 and Carlson opened 1994 as the starter. He went 1-4 in five starts, completed 44.7 percent of his passes and was injured, missing the rest of a season Houston finished 2-14. Madden NFL 95 carried a calculated 82 overall for that 1994 season. He retired afterward with 370 completions on 659 attempts for 4,469 yards, 21 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
