Walter Andrew "Bubby" Brister III was born August 15, 1962 in Alexandria, Louisiana. He played college football at Tulane and Northeast Louisiana, and the Pittsburgh Steelers took him in the third round, 67th overall, in 1986.

He won the Steelers' starting job in 1988 and held it through 1991. He set a team record with 178 consecutive passes without an interception in 1989 and led an 82-yard drive to force overtime in that season's wild-card win at Houston. His career highs came in 1990: 16 starts, 2,725 yards and 20 touchdowns. Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 59 for the 1991 season, when injuries cost him eight games, and Madden NFL 93 listed a calculated 46 for 1992, the year Bill Cowher chose Neil O'Donnell.

He ranked seventh in passer rating for Philadelphia in 1993 and threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns in a season-ending win over San Francisco; Madden NFL 95 gave him a calculated 74 for 1994. He signed with Denver in 1997 and went 4-0 as a starter in 1998 while John Elway was hurt, earning rings from Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 82 for the 1999 season. He last played in 2000 with Minnesota, finishing with 14,445 passing yards, 81 touchdowns and 78 interceptions.
