1988 Heisman runner-up; 16,338 NFL passing yards

Rodney Peete was born on March 16, 1966, in Mesa, Arizona, played college football at USC, and finished second to Barry Sanders in the 1988 Heisman Trophy voting before Detroit drafted him in the sixth round, 141st overall, in 1989. He started 11 games for the Lions in 1990 and eight in 1991 before a torn Achilles ended his season; Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 59 for that year.

Peete spent 1994 in Dallas behind Troy Aikman, appearing in seven games and starting one, and Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 66 for the season. Ray Rhodes named him Philadelphia's starter over Randall Cunningham in 1995, and he went 9-3 in 12 starts. Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 80 for 1998, the highest figure the series gave him.

He signed with Carolina in 2002 and, at 36, set career highs with 14 starts, 2,630 passing yards and 15 touchdowns for a team that had gone 1-15 the previous year. Madden NFL 03 listed him at 63 for that season. Jake Delhomme replaced him during the 2003 opener and kept the job. Peete retired in 2005 after the Panthers released him, finishing with 16,338 passing yards, 76 touchdowns and 92 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
