Steve Walsh was born on December 1, 1966 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He quarterbacked Miami to the 1987 national championship and was a consensus All-American in 1988 after passing for 3,115 yards and 29 touchdowns. The Dallas Cowboys took him second overall in the 1989 NFL supplemental draft, months after drafting Troy Aikman.

Walsh started five games as a rookie while Aikman recovered from a broken finger, including Dallas' only win of 1989, 13-3 over Washington. The Cowboys traded him to New Orleans on September 25, 1990, and he threw for 1,970 yards and 12 touchdowns as the Saints went 8-8 and reached the playoffs. Bobby Hebert reclaimed the job in 1991; Madden NFL 92 listed Walsh at a calculated 46 for that season, and Madden NFL 94 at a calculated 43 for 1993.

He signed with Chicago in April 1994, took over for an injured Erik Kramer, went 8-3 as a starter and beat Minnesota 35-18 in the wild-card round on January 1, 1995. Madden NFL 95 rated him a calculated 66 for the 1994 season. He started three games for the St. Louis Rams in 1996, a season Madden NFL 97 listed at 60, then backed up Trent Dilfer at Tampa Bay and Peyton Manning at Indianapolis. Released by the Colts on February 2, 2000, he finished with 713 completions on 1,317 attempts for 7,875 yards, 40 touchdowns and 50 interceptions.
