Matt Bryant was born on May 29, 1975, in Bridge City, Texas, and reached Baylor by way of Trinity Valley Community College. He went undrafted in 1999, worked behind a pawn shop counter and took personal-training shifts, and did not play an NFL regular-season game until 2002, when the New York Giants used him in all 16.

Short stints with Indianapolis and Miami followed in 2004, then four seasons in Tampa Bay, where he beat Philadelphia with a 62-yard field goal in October 2006. Madden NFL 09 put him at 89 for the 2008 season. That September his three-month-old son Tryson died of SIDS; Bryant returned a day after the funeral and kicked three field goals against Green Bay.

Atlanta signed him in 2009. He beat Oakland with a 55-yarder with one second left in October 2012 and ended the divisional-round game against Seattle that January with a 49-yarder, a season Madden NFL 13 graded 88. Madden NFL 16 rated him 91 for 2015, and in 2016 he led the NFL with 158 points and made his only Pro Bowl at 41. He finished with 1,758 points, 1,163 of them for Atlanta, the most in franchise history.
