Undrafted UCF kicker who made a 64-yard field goal

Matt Prater was born on August 10, 1984 and kicked at Estero High School in Estero, Florida, then for UCF from 2002 to 2005. He entered the NFL undrafted in 2006, was released by Detroit, spent time with Miami and Atlanta, and joined Denver during the 2007 season. He took over as the Broncos' kicker in 2008, a season Madden NFL 09 rated him 70.

On December 8, 2013, in 18-degree cold in Denver, he made a 64-yard field goal as the first half expired against Tennessee, the longest in league history at the time. He was named second-team All-Pro and selected to the Pro Bowl for 2013, a season Madden NFL 25 rated him 84. Madden NFL 15 rated him 95 for 2014.

The NFL suspended him for the first four games of 2014 for a substance-abuse policy violation, and Denver released him on October 3 of that year. Detroit signed him days later, and he kicked there for seven seasons; Madden NFL 21 rated him 81 for 2020. He signed with Arizona in 2021 and Buffalo in 2025. His 64-yard record stood until Justin Tucker made a 66-yarder for Baltimore on September 26, 2021.
