Kicker turned broadcaster who once missed three game-winners in a night
Jay Feely kicked for 14 NFL seasons and 271 field goals, but a single afternoon in 2005 followed him around. Wearing Giants blue, he missed three straight potential game-winning field goals in an overtime loss to Seattle, a night strange enough that NFL Films and Saturday Night Live turned it into a Dane Cook sketch.
He was better than that one game suggests. A four-year letterman at Michigan, he stuck with seven franchises, from Atlanta to Arizona, and connected on 74.7 percent of his kicks with a career long of 61 yards for the Cardinals against Buffalo in 2012. He booted an overtime game-winner against New England in 2008 and even scored a touchdown on a fake field goal against Denver in 2010.
Feely also served as an NFLPA player representative and later built a long second act as a CBS color analyst. His Madden line runs across more than a decade: a 74 in the 2002 edition as a young Falcon, into the mid-80s through his Cardinals years, and topping out at 89 for the 2011 game. Over a full career he proved far steadier than that Seattle box score ever let on.
