Nate Kaeding was born on March 26, 1982 in Iowa City and kicked at Iowa, where he won the Lou Groza Award in 2002 and was a consensus All-American in 2003. San Diego drafted him in the third round in 2004, 65th overall, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 78.
He made the Pro Bowl after the 2006 and 2009 seasons and was a first-team All-Pro in 2009, when he led the NFL with 146 points and tied for the lead with 32 field goals. Madden NFL 11 followed with a 95, his highest. He finished the regular season 181 of 210, 86.2 percent, which when he left San Diego was the best career mark in league history.
The postseason went differently: 8 of 15, 53.3 percent, over eight games. On January 17, 2010 he missed from 36, 57 and 40 yards in a 17-14 divisional loss to the Jets, three misses in one afternoon against three all regular season. He tore an ACL on the first play of 2011, was released in October 2012, kicked two games for Miami, and retired in May 2013. He took an MBA at Iowa in 2015 and has since run restaurants in Iowa City, including the reopened Hamburg Inn No. 2.
