Mike Scifres was born on October 8, 1980 in Metairie, Louisiana, punted at Western Illinois, where he was a 2002 Ray Guy Award finalist, and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round of the 2003 draft, 149th overall. Madden NFL 05 listed him at 77 for the 2004 season, his first full year as the starter.

In the wild card game on January 3, 2009, he punted six times for a 51.7-yard average with a long of 67, and all six landed inside the Indianapolis 20, four of them inside the 10. San Diego won 23-17 in overtime. Madden NFL 10 listed him at 93 for the 2009 season.

In 2012 he set the franchise single-season record with a 48.3-yard average, and Madden NFL 13 listed him at 91 for that season. He fractured his clavicle in December 2014. He played all 16 games in 2015, his thirteenth season, and Madden NFL 16 listed him at 85. San Diego released him in April 2016; he signed with Carolina that June and was released in August without playing a regular-season game. He punted 756 times for 34,152 yards and a 45.2-yard career average, and was never selected to a Pro Bowl.
