Mat McBriar Madden Career 2006-2011 - Peak 96 OVR

Mat McBriar grew up on Australian rules football in Melbourne, learned the American game late, and rode a booming leg through Hawaii and into the NFL as an undrafted punter, catching on with Dallas in 2003. He became one of the best punters of his era, a big-legged weapon who could flip a field with a single kick.

The Madden card leapt after his signature season. He had sat in the low 70s, then jumped to a 96 peak in Madden NFL 08 following his 2006 campaign, when he led the NFL with a 48.2-yard average, the first man over 48 in more than four decades, and boomed a 75-yarder along the way. The grade held in the 90s through his Dallas prime, two Pro Bowl and All-Pro seasons backing up a rating that treated him as one of the best at the position.

A blocked punt and a foot fracture dented his later Cowboys years, and he finished with brief stops in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Diego before retiring, better than 600 punts and a 45-yard career average behind him. McBriar is one of the better Australian imports the NFL has had at the position, a rules-football kid who became a Pro Bowl punter. His leap to a 96 is what a league-leading season looks like on a specialist's card.
