Robert Griffith was born on November 30, 1970, in Lanham, Maryland, walked on at San Diego State and started three seasons there, taking second-team All-Western Athletic Conference honours in 1992 and an electrical engineering degree. He went undrafted in 1993, spent time with the Sacramento Gold Miners of the Canadian Football League, then signed with the Minnesota Vikings and debuted in 1994. He played mostly on special teams for two years before taking over at strong safety in 1996, when he made 95 tackles and four interceptions; Madden NFL 97 listed him at 44 for that season.
He intercepted a career-high five passes in 1998 and was named second-team Associated Press All-Pro, then earned the selection again in 1999 with 130 tackles and four sacks. Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 87 for the 1999 season, the year he also won the Ed Block Courage Award. In 2000 he made 104 tackles and started all 16 games for his only Pro Bowl selection, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 90.
Griffith signed with Cleveland in 2002 and started 44 games in three seasons, leading the Browns with 119 tackles in 2004. Madden NFL 04 rated him 91 for the 2003 season, his highest mark in the series. Released in February 2005, he started all 32 games for Arizona across 2005 and 2006. He played 195 games over 13 seasons and finished with 1,076 tackles, 27 interceptions and 8.5 sacks.
