Champ Bailey was born on June 22, 1978, in Folkston, Georgia, and played cornerback, receiver and kick returner at Georgia, where he recorded eight interceptions and 978 receiving yards. Washington drafted him seventh overall in 1999. He started all 16 games as a rookie, a season for which Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 89.
Bailey started every game of his five Washington seasons. Madden NFL 02 rated him 96 for the 2001 season. On March 4, 2004, Denver traded Clinton Portis to Washington for Bailey and a second-round pick. He was named first-team All-Pro in each of his first three Denver seasons, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 99 for 2004. On January 14, 2006, he intercepted Tom Brady in the end zone in a divisional playoff game and returned it 100 yards to the New England one-yard line.
He led the NFL in interceptions in 2006. He made 12 Pro Bowls, the most by a defensive back, and finished with 52 interceptions in 215 games. Madden NFL 25 rated him 93 for the 2013 season, his last, when Denver reached Super Bowl XLVIII. Denver released him on March 6, 2014. He signed a one-day contract to retire on November 18, 2014, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
