Troy Polamalu was born on April 19, 1981 in Garden Grove, California and grew up in Tenmile, Oregon. He was a two-time All-American at USC, and Pittsburgh traded up to select him 16th overall in 2003. He appeared in all 16 games as a rookie without a start, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 78 for 2003. He took over at strong safety in 2004 and was selected to the first of eight Pro Bowls.
Polamalu was a first-team All-Pro in 2005, and Madden NFL 06 rated him 91 for that season. Pittsburgh beat Seattle 21-10 in Super Bowl XL in February 2006. On January 18, 2009 he returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown against Baltimore in the AFC Championship Game, and the Steelers went on to beat Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII. Madden NFL 09 rated him 98 for 2008.
Injuries held him to five games in 2009, a season for which Madden NFL 10 rated him 99. He was named AP Defensive Player of the Year for 2010 and was a first-team All-Pro again in 2011, the last of four such selections. Across 12 seasons and 158 games, all with Pittsburgh, he recorded 770 tackles, 32 interceptions and 12 sacks. He retired in April 2015 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.
