Bob Sanders: Iowa safety, 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year
Bob Sanders was born February 24, 1981, in Erie, Pennsylvania, and played college football at Iowa, where he was a first-team All-Big Ten safety from 2001 to 2003. The Indianapolis Colts drafted him in the second round, 44th overall, in 2004. Listed at 5-8 and 206 pounds, he appeared in six games as a rookie, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 79 for 2004.
He started 14 games in 2005 and was named to the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro. Madden NFL 06 rated him 85 for that season. Injuries held him to four regular-season games in 2006, but he returned for the playoff run that ended with a win over Chicago in Super Bowl XLI on February 4, 2007. Madden NFL 07 rated him 90 for 2006.
In 2007 he started 15 games, recorded 97 tackles, 3.5 sacks and two interceptions, and won AP Defensive Player of the Year along with a second first-team All-Pro selection. Madden NFL 09 rated him 99 for 2008, a season injuries cut to six games. He played three more games for Indianapolis across 2009 and 2010 and two for San Diego in 2011, finishing with 50 career games and six interceptions. Sanders was inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.
