A Thorpe Award winner with 42 interceptions over 221 games

Terence Newman was born on September 4, 1978 in Salina, Kansas, and played for Bill Snyder at Kansas State, where he won the 2002 Jim Thorpe Award, was a unanimous All-American and ran the 100 meters in 10.20 seconds. Dallas drafted him fifth overall in 2003. He started all 16 games as a rookie with 76 tackles and four interceptions, including three in a single game on December 14, 2003. Madden NFL 04 rated him 82.

He went to the Pro Bowl after the 2007 and 2009 seasons. Injuries held him to ten games in 2008, a season Madden NFL 09 rated 95. He set a career high with five interceptions in 2010. Dallas released him in 2012 and he signed with Cincinnati, where Mike Zimmer was defensive coordinator; Madden NFL 13 rated him 82 for that first Bengals season.

Newman followed Zimmer to Minnesota in 2015 and intercepted two passes against Oakland on November 15 of that year at age 37, matching Deion Sanders as the only cornerbacks to do so at that age. He played all 16 games in 2017, and Madden NFL 18 rated him 85. He retired on September 1, 2018 and joined the Vikings coaching staff the same day, finishing with 221 games, 876 tackles, 42 interceptions and 184 passes defensed. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2026.
