A two-time All-Pro tight end who caught 1,228 passes in 17 seasons
Jason Witten was born on May 6, 1982 in Washington, D.C., grew up in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and played college football at Tennessee. The Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the third round, 69th overall, in 2003. He fractured his jaw in Week 5 of his rookie season against Arizona, had three plates inserted and missed one game. Madden NFL 04 rated him 70.
Witten caught 87 passes in 2004 and made the first of his Pro Bowls. Madden NFL 06 rated him 92 after the 2005 season. In 2007 he set a Cowboys tight end record with 96 receptions, made a 53-yard catch at Philadelphia in Week 9 after his helmet came off, and was named first-team All-Pro. He was first-team All-Pro again in 2010, the season Madden NFL 11 rated him 97. His 110 receptions in 2012 were the most by a tight end in a single season at the time.
Witten announced his retirement in May 2018 and worked that season as ESPN's Monday Night Football analyst. He signed with Dallas again on February 28, 2019, then played the 2020 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where Madden NFL 21 rated him 77. He finished with 1,228 receptions, 13,046 receiving yards, 74 touchdowns and 11 Pro Bowls. He announced his second retirement on January 27, 2021 and signed a one-day contract with the Cowboys.
