Darren Sharper was one of the most prolific ball-hawking safeties of his era, a William & Mary product Green Bay took in the second round in 1997 who roamed the deep middle like a center fielder. He had a gift for reading quarterbacks and turning interceptions into points, and he did it for more than a decade across Green Bay, Minnesota and New Orleans.

The Madden card climbed to a peak that matched the production. He hit a 98 peak in Madden NFL 04, the ceiling coming during his interception-heavy prime, the number tracking a safety who finished with 63 career interceptions and eleven returned for touchdowns, a mark tied for the most in NFL history. He won a Super Bowl XLIV title with the Saints and made five Pro Bowls.

His life after football is defined by something far darker than any of it. Sharper was convicted in multiple states of drugging and raping women, pleaded guilty in 2016, and received a lengthy prison sentence, registering as a sex offender, a set of crimes that stands as the central and sobering fact of his post-playing life.
