Lorenzo Neal was born on December 27, 1970, in Hanford, California, and rushed for 2,405 yards at Fresno State, where he was also an All-American wrestler. New Orleans drafted him in the fourth round in 1993, 89th overall. He led the Saints in rushing in his debut on September 5, 1993, then suffered a season-ending ankle injury a week later and moved to fullback.
Madden NFL 97 rated him 26 for the 1996 season, his last in New Orleans. He signed with the New York Jets in 1997 and was traded to Tampa Bay in 1998. He then spent two seasons in Tennessee, fielding the kickoff on the Music City Miracle in January 2000 and playing in Super Bowl XXXIV. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 86 for that 2000 season. Two seasons in Cincinnati followed.
San Diego signed him in 2003 to block for LaDainian Tomlinson, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 92 for that season. He made the Pro Bowl for 2002 and for 2005 through 2007, with first-team All-Pro honors for 2006 and 2007. Madden NFL 07 rated him 99 for the 2006 season. A broken leg in December 2007 ended a run of 221 straight games. He spent 2008 in Baltimore and finished with 239 games, 807 rushing yards and 199 receptions for 1,086 yards. Fresno State retired his number 22 on October 23, 2021.
