Joey Porter was born on March 22, 1977 in Bakersfield, California, and played college football at Colorado State before Pittsburgh drafted him in the third round, 73rd overall, in 1999. He appeared in all 16 games as a rookie without a start, then took over at right outside linebacker in 2000 and started every game he played there for the next seven years. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 77 for that 2000 season.
Porter was named first-team All-Pro in 2002 and made the first of four Pro Bowls that year. Madden NFL 04 rated him 95 for 2003. He started at outside linebacker in Pittsburgh's win over Seattle in Super Bowl XL in February 2006, and Madden NFL 07 rated him 97 for the 2006 season, his last with the Steelers.
He signed with Miami in 2007 and led the AFC with 17.5 sacks in 2008, earning a second first-team All-Pro selection; Madden NFL 10 rated him 94 for 2009. He finished his playing career with Arizona in 2010 and 2011 and retired with 98 sacks. Porter coached the Steelers outside linebackers from 2015 to 2018 and was inducted into the team's Hall of Honor in 2025.
