Shaun Alexander had a nose for the end zone few backs ever matched. The Alabama product spent a year behind Ricky Watters before taking over in Seattle, and in 2005 he put together one of the great seasons of the era: 28 total touchdowns, a rushing title, and an MVP on the way to Super Bowl XL.
Madden had him at 81 and a 98 by the 2007 edition, right at that peak, when he also graced the cover. Then came the so-called curse: a broken foot in 2006 and a swift decline. Three Pro Bowls and 100 rushing touchdowns later, almost all of it was packed into a brilliant five-year window.
