Rashean Mathis was born on August 27, 1980 in Nashville, Georgia, and played high school football at Englewood in Jacksonville. At Bethune-Cookman he intercepted 14 passes in 2002, a Division I-AA single-season record, and won the Buck Buchanan Award. The Jaguars drafted him 39th overall in 2003, and he started all 16 games as a rookie. Madden NFL 04 rated him 67 for that season.
Mathis had five interceptions in each of the next two years and returned one 41 yards for an overtime win at Pittsburgh on October 16, 2005. He intercepted eight passes in 2006 and was named first-team All-Pro and to his only Pro Bowl, and Madden NFL 07 rated him 92 for that year. Madden NFL 08 rated him 97 for 2007, the highest figure of his career.
A torn knee ligament ended his 2011 season, and he left Jacksonville after 2012 as the franchise's career interception leader with 30. He signed with Detroit in 2013 and returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown against Buffalo on October 5, 2014. A concussion ended his 2015 season in November, and he signed a one-day contract on April 13, 2016 to retire as a Jaguar. Mathis played 175 games with 32 interceptions and four defensive touchdowns, and entered the Black College Football Hall of Fame on June 7, 2025.
