Hines Ward was born March 8, 1976 in Seoul, South Korea, grew up in Georgia, and played quarterback, running back and receiver at the University of Georgia. Pittsburgh drafted him in the third round, 92nd overall, in 1998. Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 85 for his rookie season, when he appeared in all 16 games without a start.

Madden NFL 02 rated him 75 for 2001, the year of the first of four consecutive Pro Bowl selections. He topped 1,000 receiving yards in each season from 2001 through 2004, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 93 for 2003. Madden NFL 06 rated him 94 for 2005, the season Pittsburgh won Super Bowl XL on February 5, 2006. Ward caught a 43-yard touchdown pass in that game and was named its Most Valuable Player.

He won a second title in Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009. On January 1, 2012, Ward became the eighth player in NFL history to reach 1,000 career receptions. He announced his retirement on March 20, 2012 with 1,000 catches for 12,083 yards and 85 touchdowns, all Pittsburgh franchise records. The Steelers inducted him into their Hall of Honor in 2019.
