The nickel corner who sacked Hasselbeck to ice Super Bowl XL

Townsend spent all 12 of his NFL seasons in Pittsburgh, a fourth-round pick from Alabama in 1998 who outlasted nearly everyone as the Steelers' nickel and outside corner. He had a rare nose for the quarterback for a defensive back, and his sack of Matt Hasselbeck in the closing minutes of Super Bowl XL helped seal the win over Seattle. He collected a second ring in Super Bowl XLIII and retired with 18 interceptions and 15.5 sacks among his 322 tackles, a stat line built by a corner who both blitzed and covered.

His rating aged well for a role player. Townsend hovered in the 70s through the early editions, reached 86 in both the 2005 and 2006 games, and peaked at 89 in the 2008 edition, deep into his 30s. He moved straight into coaching after 2009, working as a defensive backs coach and later a coordinator.
