Penei Sewell was born on October 9, 2000 in Malaeimi, American Samoa, and played college football at Oregon, where he won the Outland Trophy and the Morris Trophy in 2019. He opted out of the 2020 season and entered the 2021 draft, and Detroit took him seventh overall. He started all 16 games as a rookie and lined up at both tackle spots. Madden NFL 22 rated him 75 for that 2021 season.
Sewell settled in at right tackle in 2022, started all 17 games and made his first Pro Bowl, and Madden NFL 23 rated him 80 for the year. He was named first-team All-Pro for the first time in 2023, a season Madden NFL 24 rated him 86. In April 2024 he signed a four-year extension worth $112 million, the largest deal given to an offensive lineman to that point, and Madden NFL 25, the 2024 release, rated him 96 for that season.
He was first-team All-Pro again in 2024 and 2025 and made the Pro Bowl in each season from 2022 through 2025. Through the 2025 season he had started all 83 regular-season games he played for Detroit.
